The main building of KARTIKA WIJAYA HOTEL was built in 1891 as one of the Sarkies Family’s villas, who also was the owner of Raffles Hotel in. Singapore; Strand Hotel in Ranggon, Oranye Hotel ( now Majapahit Hotel ) in Surabaya and Niagara Hotel in Lawang.
At the 1st Dutch soldier camp/post until the 2nd military aggression. At the time, the underground level, located under the hotel’s lobby was used as a hiding place.
The building itself was a long time ago known as “Jambe Dawe Building” ( Jambe means Pinang tree and Dawe means blown leaves ). The Managemen of the hotel decided to preserve these Pinang trees to commemorate the past.
